Character:

Character's Name: Emi Ibarazaki
Character's Fandom: Katawa Shoujo (visual novel)

Character's Home Universe: Katawa Shoujo takes place at Yamaku Academy, which the developers at 4Leaf have described as being "in a small town in Nagano, Japan that is not portrayed in a way that makes geographical sense." It's near a major metropolitan city with a great deal of stores - including esoterica like antique stores as well as cafes, restaurants and a jazz club - and an airport.

Yamaku Academy itself is a prestigious boarding school which is primarily for the physically disabled. They don't bar entry to anyone else, but the combination of high tuition fees without scholarships and, well, bigotry ensure that there usually aren't that many students there without a disability of some kind.

It's like any other high school - there's a gym and a swimming pool, a well-stocked library, school festivals for spring and Tanabata, a cafeteria with terribad food (Emi will compare brickstuff to it in less than glowing terms), homerooms with rotating teachers Japanese style... and a full medical staff with a large medical wing. Okay, so not exactly like every other high school.

Katawa Shoujo is basically set in something resembling the real world in contemporary Japan.

Canon Point you're taking him/her/it from: In case someone wants to app the MC Hisao Nakai or any other castmates (unlikely, although Shizune could Get Things Done in a big way), Emi is taken from directly before the beginning of the game, and therefore before meeting Hisao.

Method of Arrival on Station: Definitely a pod. No other way makes sense for her.

Physical Appearance: Emi Ibarazaki is a girlish young woman of 16. She has blond hair she keeps in twin ponytails at the side of her head, held in place by barrettes with gold plastic balls on the end. She's athletic, with a runners build: when not in her school uniform (a classic blouse-and-green skirt with a black bow in the collar), she tends to athletic clothing similar to what she's wearing in the icon.

Emi's legs have been amputated below the knee. She generally wears a set of prosthetic legs that, while not lifelike exactly, can pass for normal under her usual high striped stockings. She ditches those for a pair of athletic legblades when she goes track running.

Personality:

Emi Izabaraki has seen some shit. Her legs - and her father - were taken from her in a car accident several years ago that still gives her nightmares and mild PTSD to past the end of her route this day.

Her beloved father was the one who first encouraged her to run track, which is one of the reasons she threw herself into the practice: the fact that it's almost meditative for her at this point doesn't hurt. She's described an endorphin high as "better than sex," although this was probably just have been teasing/flirting with Hisao. In my headcanon, she was a virgin before meeting Hisao... but familiar with the concept, and curious about it; who wouldn't be after talking with a Track Captain I'm tempted to call Big Gay Al?

Emi does not like to rely on other people. She will accept help and express gratitude for it, but she's slow to truly trust anyone and keeps a lot of her cards close to her chest. Almost no one in her tight circle of real friends knows about her father's death during the accident, not even her best friend Rin. It took an academic year of game time for her to become comfortable enough with Hisao to tell him about her father: it took longer for her to say that she loved him.

That she was attracted to him, not so much: casual romantic relationships are nothing new to her. But as any Bliss Stage player can tell you romance, even sex, does not ensure intimacy. She's a good flirt but it will take a boatload of trust for her to get serious about a romance, or a friendship for that matter. She knows everyone at the school. But Emi only really talks to Rin, Miki from her track, and the school nurse - and the nurse worked with her since before Yamaku.

Emi is not competitive in the sense that Shizune Hakamichi is - winning or losing and the social status of victory or defeat are relatively meaningless to her. What DOES matter is the effort. Emi Ibarazaki is "the fastest thing on no legs," a born runner who wasn't going to let a little thing like a double amputation stop her from setting athletic records. She runs track every single day to keep herself in good physical condition. Rin identifies with her in that way: her artistic passions are as defining as Emi's athletic ones.

Emi is cheerful, relentlessly so, and very social and sociable: she's a good friend, a flirt, and has a teenager's gift for well-timed profanity in jest. She's the sort of girl who will slug you in the shoulder for telling a good joke at her expense, then smile it off and allow you to counter-attack. It's very rare to see a time when she's not perky and upbeat; even in anger she's aggressive but not really bitter. She's quick to anger and to forgive.

Abilities and Skills: Emi Izabaraki is the fastest thing on no legs, as she's fond of saying, and a lot faster than a lot of runners without that particular handicap when she's wearing her leg-blades. Even in her prosthetic legs, she's pretty freakin' zippy.

Other than that, and being in excellent health, Emi is otherwise a contemporary high school student in terms of her abilities.

Sample:

A blonde streak speeds by.

"The Fay'lia are coming! The Fay'lia are coming!" Emi shouted, a drive by warning. She was a flash of gold and green, a lightning bolt made flesh on metal blades. It was literally a matter of life and death, now. Anything with a reactor - anything hotter than a human being - would have been detected and blown away from orbit, and this planet was primitive enough that they had no surface-to-orbit weapons or starships to run a blockades: just short buildings with tiled roofs, gardens and small stores.

It reminded Emi a little bit of home. She gritted her teeth and redoubled her speed.

"The Fay'lia are coming! The Fay'lia are coming! Get to the shelters, get to the Gates!" Emi shouted, again, turning a corner and bouncing on the tips of her steel toes. How much time could the Station buy? How much could a small squadron of obsolete warships - an X-Com flyer here, an Enterprise NX class there, a small and flickering ANIMa armed with with crackling blue fire, a Ahb missile destroyer in serious disrepair - do to stave off the dropships?

All that they could, of course. Emi smiled. That was the right answer - the only answer. The Resistance would do all that they could do.
